In the Arena

A dear friend requested prayer this week for a group of Christian teachers working in the public school “arena.” The various members of this group were experiencing strange mishaps and misadventures that were wreaking havoc in their lives and classrooms. Perhaps you would think that is was just coincidental that these friends and laborers with Christ were experiencing negative events in their lives all at the same time. Personally, I believe these things were happening as a concerted attack of the enemy.
As I began to pray for them the word and image of “arena” kept coming to my mind! I imagine that being a Christian teacher and working in a public school could very well feel like doing battle in the Colosseum of old. Fighting with one arm tied behind you and a gag in your mouth!

gladiator and lion

The Apostle Peter wrote:  Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:  1Peter 5:8

Yet this scripture leaps to mind..

1 John 4:4 (KJV)

Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.

It is hard sometimes to think of myself as a warrior or a soldier.  I’d rather curl up with a good book or even with a good movie, than get on my knees and intercede.  Yeah…confession time.  Lord, forgive me for being lax.

We are called to put on our armor and take up our sword,  and enter the “arena” of prayer for the saints.  Sword of the Lord

Read Ephesians 6 again:

He has equipped us for a reason, friends.  Time is short and the church must wake up and take her place in the end times.  The enemy is very subtle and would have us think that all this spiritual warfare is for the fanatics.  Well, if the Holy Spirit lives in you, He is there to lead you into all truth.  He knows what is needed even if you don’t. He will pray in you and through you, to accomplish His will in any situation.  Your assignment is to listen, believe, obey, and pray!

You are not alone in this quest, for you lean upon the arm of the Triumphant One.  The Christ who gave us the victory.

When He had disarmed the rulers and authorities [those supernatural forces of evil operating against us], He made a public example of them [exhibiting them as captives in His triumphal procession], having triumphed over them through the cross.  Col.2:15 Amplified bible

Yes!!  You are in the “arena!”  You are surrounded by a great cloud of witness, cheering for your victory from the heavenly balconies.  (Heb.12:1)  Fear not!!  The Lord is on your side! There is much work to be done!   We are learning to do battle in the arena of prayer!  We do warfare in the arena of praise!

Yes! There is a Lion!  The Lion of the Tribe of Judah!  Jesus Christ Himself!  He is the victorious One. We do our fighting from the protection of His refuge.  Not always free from trials and temptations. Not even always free from failures. But, we stand on the Word of the Living God and declare with St. Paul:  But thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumph in Christ, and through us spreads and makes evident everywhere the sweet fragrance of the knowledge of Him.  2 Corinthians 2:14  AMP

Let’s Pray: Mighty Warrior, Lord of Hosts, We look to You, the Author and Finisher of our faith to work in us to will and to do Your good pleasure. To be used of You in prayer for the saints to accomplish your purposes in the earth and in Your Bride, the Church.  Strengthen us to the work of prayer in all wisdom and understanding and in the Spirit.  In Jesus’ Name,

Here’s an old medley to encourage your faith!

  1. Needed that encouragement today!! Feel a little battle worn, but God will give me strength and victory!! Need to slay a few giants!!

  2. Seems funny that He should call such as we to the battle, doesn’t it, my friend? But He does call us; and He equips us, too. Learning much at this late stage of my life! 🙂

  3. An excellent post, Shirley, and a faithful admonition. We need to be constantly reminded to “Arise, for this is not our rest.” We need to be up and about the Father’s business, that business being to contend for the truth. This is the true warfare, and is the only way we will see converts and make disciples. Victory is assured. We have as our leader He who is with us as the DREAD CHAMPION (Jer.20:11 NAS), and the BREAKER who has gone before us (Micah 2:13). But our first enemy to be conquered is ourselves. Our first arena is Peniel. Like Jacob of old, we must wrestle alone with the Lord till daybreak, that He would grant us power to prevail over our own hearts. We must win in our own grand arena before we take on the world in that greater arena. That is clear in 2 Cor.10:3-6, “having in a readiness to revenge all disobedience when our own obedience is fulfilled.” Change us, Lord!

    • So true, Susie! The world is not our true home, and the battleground is first in our own hearts and minds. Thanks for your comment and wonderful words.
