Follow On!

Then shall we know, if we follow on to know the Lord: his going forth is prepared as the morning; and he shall come unto us as the rain, as the latter and former rain unto the earth. Hosea 6:3 KJV

“Follow me,” said Jesus, time and time again.  He beckons to us even now to follow Him.  “Where to?” you may ask.  The answer is: somewhere that you might not want to go. Matthew 16: 24  “Then Jesus said unto His disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.” KJV

Now, where did Jesus go with His cross?  To Calvary; to be crucified.  That is a scary thought, isn’t it?  Makes you want to think about it, doesn’t it?   But wait! We are not finished following!  Keep going!  Follow Jesus right into Resurrection Life!

John 8:12  Then spake Jesus again to them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.  KJV

The purpose of this faith following of Jesus, is to KNOW Him.  and to be made like Him.

Ephesian 3:19 And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of Christ.
I like this verse in the Amplified version, too:
and [that you may come] to know [practically, through personal experience] the love of Christ which far surpasses [mere] knowledge [without experience], that you may be filled up [throughout your being] to all the fullness of God [so that you may have the richest experience of God’s presence in your lives, completely filled and flooded with God Himself]. AMP
The knowledge we are after is not just a head knowledge or understanding, but the EXPERIENTIAL knowledge of His Presence in our lives.  It is so easy to lapse into leaning on  what we know about Him, rather than focusing on His actual presence in our lives.  We can get busy and miss our time with Him, sitting at His feet, being in His presence. (the ONE thing He said is “needful.” ( Luke 10:42) We cruise along in WHAT we know rather than WHO we know. We may not be backsliding, but we aren’t really following on!
In this day of social media, we hear the hue and cry  to “follow me on Twitter or Facebook.”  We might be following a number of people or groups. But that is not the kind of following Jesus is calling us to.  He is calling us to “know” Him.  Not just in recognising Him, but in full discernment of who He is.  Being awake and aware of Him in all of our circumstances and activities.  There is such blessing in this kind of knowing:
2 Peter 1: 3    According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue
Philippians 3: 10 – 11 That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death;  If by any means I might attain unto the resurrection of the dead.
And  so, my prayer is the prayer that Paul prayed in Ephesians 1: 17  That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation, in the knowledge of him.  As you FOLLOW ON!

  1. You’re preachin’ again!!! I was really taken into this message. Especially, when I got to “We cruise along in WHAT we know rather than WHO we know. We may not be backsliding, but we aren’t really following on!” This is my fight daily to keep myself focused. I lose sight so quickly and it makes me so mad. I saw a movie not too long ago of a priest beating his back with a whip…sometimes I feel like that’s what it would take (not doing it but just sayin’). Thank you, Sister Shirley, for a good Word.

    • No whipping, Mitch! LOL Just let your friends nudge you a little, and be sure to nudge them back, because we all need the reminders. It is the great challenge of the Christian journey to stay in Jesus. We are never really separated from Him & His love, we just stop realizing it. My favorite verse is Ps. 66: 8-9 ‘…(He) holdeth our soul in life and suffers not our feet to be moved.” Hmmm… sounds like a blog subject, huh?
