I love Romans 8! I count it as my freedom chapter! That is because it follows Romans 7! The one that says, “O, wretched man that I am! Who shall deliver me from the body of this death.” (v 18) And “For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not!” (v 24)
Yeah, that is me! It might be YOU, too! I think that this is the struggle of the Christian walk. We desire to do well. To stay, as one friend put it. “up to date with God.” We know what to do and we want to do it, but for some reason we just don’t manage to do it consistently. (sigh)
But thank God for Romans 8! There is a remedy for the trouble in Romans 7!!
Paul had struggled with this same problem and he has given us the key to getting it right! First, there is NO CONDEMNATION! We are in Christ! We are covered by the precious blood of Jesus. Second, He reminds us with the Psalmist that we were known from the beginning and that He has a plan for us. He has destined us to be conformed to the Image of Christ! Our destiny is to BE LIKE JESUS! How miraculous is that?
Even more miraculous is that we don’t have to struggle along trying to make it happen! He has provided everything we need “for life and godliness!” He has sent HIMSELF in the form of the Holy Spirit to live IN us, to make it happen. All we have to do is acknowledge Him and obey Him. He calls it walking in the Spirit. That happens as we spend time being close to Him; keeping our hearts open to the Voice of the Shepherd. He wants to show you how to walk in His ways. What a wonder!
Let’s pray: Lord, Thank You for making a way for us to walk in the Spirit instead of the flesh. Draw us ever closer to Yourself every day, that we might hear Your voice and obey Your words. We want to become more like You! That is our destiny! In Jesus Name we pray, Amen!
