Many Sons to Glory

For some reason I keep hearing/thinking/seeing these phrases: “…many sons to glory.” and “…firstborn of many brethren.”

Here it is in Hebrews 2: 10 ~ “For it became him, for whom are all things, and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons unto glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings.”

Romans 8: 29 says something similar: “For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.”

For this reason was Christ sent to earth. To save, yes. But, also to transform us into His own image.  The whole creation is waiting for the transformation of His people.  In the NOW! Not the sweet by and by!  Yes, there will be a day when even our bodies will be redeemed and we will live with Him in heaven, but I am talking of transformation here on earth.

Romans 8: 19 says it like this:  “For the earnest expectation of the creature (creation)  waiteth for the manifestation of the sons of God”

This is a work of the Spirit, not of the carnal mind. Our carnal minds, however well intentioned are at odd with the Spirit of God. It is HIS work.  We don’t have to struggle and strain to transform ourselves. He will do it if we present ourselves to Him continually. If we receive Him anew each and every day.

I have worked, and worked hard, to change myself to be like Jesus. But I have found that I can’t change myself!  But, I am discovering that HE will change me if I come to Him every day.

It doesn’t mean that we won’t suffer; or that it won’t be hard. In fact, suffering is part of the deal.  Romans 8:17 reminds us that as joint heirs (sons and brethren) it will not always be easy.         “And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.”

So, stop struggling!  Remember to present yourself daily at your trysting place with Jesus. receive Him. Let Him rain upon your heart. Let Him shine like the sun on your earth. Let HIM transform you!

I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. Romans 12:1

Fullness!

Thanksgiving!  One of my favorite holidays.  partly because I love to cook (and receive all the compliments from my family on their favorite dishes!)  But, mostly because we gather.  We set our other interests and activities aside and gather together to enjoy each other.  What a  blessing is in that gathering!

And then, of course, there is that feeling of fullness.  The house is full; the table is full; the belly is full; the heart is full! Fullness!  One of God’s richest blessings! An aspect of His very character!

Ephesians 3: 14- 19 says:

For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,

15 Of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named,

16 That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man;

17 That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love,

18 May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height;

19 And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.

Would the Apostle Paul pray for something that he did not think was possible in God?  No!  It is possible to be FULL of God and full of His fulness!   (KJV spelling)

Jesus is all about fullness!  Look what He did with a little boy’s lunch of 5 small loaves and 2 little fish!

He filled the bellies of 5000 men, along with the women and children there, with 12 baskets FULL left over!  Abundance!  Fullness!

Look What He did with the draught of fishes!  The abundance almost sank the boat!  Fullness!

This is what He wants for His children! To be FULL of HIM!  Full to overflowing. That we, the Children of God,may be manifested to a needy, starving, lonely, sinful world. In this way, He will bring many more sons to know His glory! Receive His FULLNESS!

So, this Thanksgiving, whether you find yourself surrounded by people, or in a solitary situation, you can experience …receive…God’s fullness! You can be full of wonder; full of joy; full of love; full of forgiveness; full of His Spirit!  FULL OF JESUS!

May you experience this special kind of abundance in your household and in your heart!

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

As Rain On the Mown Grass

As I was reading my devotional this morning by Charles Spurgeon, that giant of the faith & well-spring of wisdom, I was inspired by his description of the life of faith as simply the acceptance of a gift. No struggle, no work, no merit on our part. Just RECEIVING the gift of grace. Just as the earth and the oceans receive the rain that falls upon them; just as a baby bird receives food from its mother; just as the branches and leaves of the trees receive the sunlight poured over them, so should we receive the gift of the Son of God.  “As ye have received Christ” Col 2:6.

As we receive Him, He becomes part of us. Just like when we eat and drink, and the nutrients in the food become a part of our bodies, so He becomes a part of us when we receive Him in faith. His life is made manifest in us…supernaturally. We are made alive unto God; partakers of the divine nature!  There is no struggle in it, just like there is no struggle in us to turn our food into fuel and structures for our physical bodies.

We receive His Life!  His “absolute life” ( Greek= zoe) is made part of us through our receiving faith!

As Galatians 2: 20 tells us…”but Christ lives in me. And the life which I now live in the flesh, I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.”

Romans 8: 29 tells us that we are destined to be “conformed to the image if Christ, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.”  It is because of the miracle of faith, of RECEIVING Christ, He lives in many!  He is multiplied!

As we receive this rain, this food, this bread and wine of life, He becomes part of our very being (our spiritual DNA, if you like) just like the rain becomes part of the earth. And as we receive Him, “He brings many Sons to Glory.” Hebrews 2: 10,11

Yet, sometimes, like spoiled children, we reject the precious gift through doubt, or intellectual high-mindedness, or worldly pursuits, or just plain stubbornness,  and thus we remain stuck in our old, fleshly ways.  Humility and open hands are what we need.  Like baby birds receiving our necessary food, but unable to feed ourselves. No struggling, no trying, just receiving…Jesus.

Heaven help us to open our hearts, our minds, and our very beings to the rain of His Spirit, the Seed of His Life, the Bread of His Body and the Wine of His precious Blood, to make us “alive unto God.” (Romans 6: 11)  True Children and Brethren. As He brings many Sons to glory!

For the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea. Hab.2:14

Lead Me To The Rock

I

Anyone else weary?  I am!  I am so tired of being bombarded with mud-slinging political ads, negative news reports, shouting news “contributors,” and dire prophesies.  It is overwhelming, isn’t it.  Being overwhelmed is a result of walking in this world, but our gracious Lord has given us a remedy for that. Here it is in Psalm 61:

Hear my cry, O God; attend unto my prayer.

From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I.

For thou hast been a shelter for me, and a strong tower from the enemy.

There is one place to go in these turbulent, changing times.  The Rock of Ages.  He tells us in Malachi 3: 6 ~ “I am the Lord, I change not.”   There is no “shadow of turning” in Him. He is a place of refuge and rest.

We must disengage our hearts from the turmoil and go to the Rock.  Notice I did not say to disengage our minds from what is going on around us. We still must be in the world, just not of it.  We must do our duty as He directs, but we must trust Him for the outcome and for His plan for this age.

Let’s not be swept up in the winds of political storm. May our passions be directed by the Lord of Love, who gave His life a ransom for many, and not by our strong opinions and philosophies.

Jesus is the Rock!  Let’s go to Him and find your shelter!
